We take responsibility
Sustainability is a multi-layered concept. It encompasses ecological, economic and social dimensions in order to ensure a future worth living for generations to come. Sustainability means utilising resources in such a way that they are preserved for future generations while ensuring social justice and economic stability. As a group of companies, we have a special responsibility in this context: by operating sustainably, we can not only minimise our ecological footprint, but also create positive momentum and achieve long-term economic benefits. Sustainability in our business activities therefore means making ethical and responsible decisions that benefit both the environment and society.
Duties of care
The Weiss Group is committed to respecting human rights and environmental standards in its own business operations and in all our supply chains. You can find our Code of Conduct, declarations of commitment and reports here.
Commitment to the environment
A company the size of the WEISS Group not only bears a high level of economic responsibility, but we are also committed to environmental protection in a special way. And we are happy to bear this responsibility and always act in accordance with the latest findings. The conservation of resources, the minimisation of emissions, water protection and prudent waste management have always been of great importance to WEISS. And wherever we can become even better, we take further measures to optimise our environmental footprint.
Emissions
High-quality printing requires machines that are never entirely without emissions. It is the operator's responsibility to neutralise these emissions by acting in the most environmentally friendly way possible. We monitor our machines closely and with our inspection stamp we guarantee that no harmful emissions from our printing machines are released into the environment.
Waste disposal
Responsible waste management at WEISS means first and foremost, avoiding waste, secondly, recycling waste and thirdly, disposing of waste. To this end, we first use raw materials and supplies as sparingly as possible. Waste that is produced despite all this is carefully sorted and fed into various recycling processes. Only then do we dispose of whatever remains at the end.
Water protection
Protection of natural waters and the sewage system: A must with WEISS! Despite the large company premises, we do not produce uncontrolled masses of water. Large quantities of rainwater, as can occur on the roof surfaces of our buildings, are drained into rainwater retention basins - ponds that were created at the lower end of the site. From there they can seep slowly and without erosion into the groundwater.
Combined heat and power plant
WEISS covers a large part of its electrical requirements from its own sources. Since 2014, a combined heat and power unit (CHP) has been in use, generating enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 9,400 private households with energy. If we do not need as much electricity during operation as our CHP produces, for example on weekends, we feed the surplus energy into the public grid. Thanks to this resource-saving approach, we save around 7,180 tons of CO2 each year compared to using the general electricity grid.
Energy management system
WEISS' aim with regard to energy policy is to reduce energy consumption and continuously increase energy efficiency. To implement its energy goals, WEISS has introduced an energy management system in accordance with DIN ISO 50001 and had it certified by TÜV Rheinland. This enables us to comply with the commitments which we have made in our energy policy and to continuously improve our energy performance through a systematic approach.
Our certifications
FSC
The seal of the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ®) identifies wood products from environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically viable forest management. This applies to the entire wood "product chain", including printing paper, and is verified by accredited certifiers.
Nature Office
With various climate protection models, Nature Office enables a printing company like WEISS-Druck to offer its print customers printed matter produced in a CO2-neutral way. The focus is on determining the "CO2 footprint" and its compensation by supporting climate protection projects.
Blauer Engel
The Blaue Engel is the oldest environmental seal worldwide. With regard to resource protection, it is awarded to papers and the print products made from them. It is also important to document the harmlessness of consumables such as inks and coatings.
PEFC
As an alternative to the FSC ® Organisation, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes ™ (PEFC ™) is dedicated to sustainable forest management. It focuses on the international, national and regional approach along the wood "product chain".
EU Ecolabel
The "EU Ecolabel" is the counterpart to the "Blue Angel" certificate at the European level. The certification serves to protect resources and the environment and prevents the use of harmful consumables.
